Greenhouse dancers speak out against postcode wars in national dance competition

Tuesday 23 February 2010

Students from Greenhouse programmes at City of London Academy (CoLA) and St Michael and All Angels (SMAA) will speak out against postcode wars in 'Rock Challenge', a national dance competition, this Friday.

The 'Rock Challenge' is an anti-drug and anti-crime prevention initiative where groups from secondary schools around the country are asked to create an 8 minute dance on a theme of their choice. The dancers from CoLA and SMAAA have been working intensely over the last four weeks to create a piece named 'Broken Territory' based on the destruction of 'postcode' wars.

Greenhouse dance coach Aleta says:

'A new postcode has been created between two rival neighbourhood gangs. A battle has broken out for control and ownership of this territory. Consumed by their quest for power, both sides fail to see the young people who have already made this place their home.'

'Our piece looks at the issues surrounding postcode wars as well as the growing number of teenagers who call the streets their home. Can we be proud of our neighbourhood without being prejudiced against others?'
