Young Judo star becomes National Champion

Ernest Bevin Sixth Form student Adam Hoshal has started the year in stunning form as he took the gold medal at the 2011 British Judo Trials in the under 81kg weight category held at the EIS Sheffield on Saturday 22 January.

Adam’s win secures him a place in the British Judo squad and number one position in the British Judo Rankings.

“I’m very happy, the judo facilities at Ernest Bevin have helped a lot,” said Adam. “I just need to train harder now to keep on winning.”

Adam, who has been training on the Greenhouse Judo programme, blazed his way through the preliminary rounds with two maximum score wins and one half point victory. He won two closely fought contests to make it through the knock out stages. In the final Adam faced an opponent who he had recently beaten in the 2010 Scottish Open and seized his opportunity with a kouchi-gari pick-up to dump his opponent flat on his back with impetus to take the Under 20 British Trials title.

“This is a great win for Adam building on his British Schoolboy title which he won last year,” said Eric Bonti, judo coach and PE teacher at EBC. “It shows Adam can hold his own at this much tougher competitive level.”

Adam joins two times Olympian, Judo Coach (at Ernest Bevin College and Phoenix Club) and Bevin old boy Winston Gordon, Head Judo Coach for Greenhouse Charity, who retains his place in the British Senior squad after taking a bronze medal in the Senior Trials.
